Reflect on Section 28’s legacy through a guided tour, storytelling, history, and creative writing in a day of queer remembrance and resilience.
| Join Swansea University and Cardiff University for a day of reflection and creativity exploring the legacy of Section 28, a legislation that, from 1988 to 2003, silenced LGBTQIA+ voices in schools and public life. This inclusive event invites these communities, allies, and the parents and carers of queer individuals to share stories, to engage with queer heritage, and challenge discrimination through dialogue, creative writing and walking tours in Cardiff.
The day begins with the Queer Emporium’s LGBTQ+ History one-hour Walking Tour, connecting Cardiff’s streets with stories of resistance and pride. This will then be followed by an interactive session using objects from Amgueddfa Cymru’s LGBTQ+ collection to encourage people to reflect on how s18 shaped their own personal histories. In the final session, a creative writer will lead a storytelling workshop, encouraging participants to reflect on and share their experiences of Section 28. This event is a celebration of resilience, a space for healing, and a call to remember. Participants can select areas of interest in the programme in the booking process. Limited capacity is available on some workshops and we will be operating a waiting list. This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 6 - 15 November 2025. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
