Join us for the latest in our Breakfast Briefing series, featuring Professor Richard Jones FLSW FRS, Emeritus Professor of Materials Physics and Innovation Policy at the University of Manchester, formerly Independent Science Advisor to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

Manchester has often been at the forefront of debates about urban renewal, city-region devolution and regional industrial and innovation strategy; the new Prime Minister’s frequent references to “Manchesterism” makes it all the more timely to reflect on the image and the reality of the city’s recent economic, political and social development. In this thought-provoking session, Richard Jones will reflect on Manchester's experience and consider the relationship between place, power and prosperity in shaping economic and social futures.

Drawing on his work as an advocate for a more place based approach to research and development spending in support of regional economies, and his engagement with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Richard will offer personal reflections on the opportunities and challenges facing cities and regions as they seek to build inclusive and sustainable prosperity.

The session will be chaired by Dr Katherine Parsons of Cardiff Business School and will include time for audience questions and discussion.
