Join John Williams for a special screening of his observational documentary with personal reflection, which captures ten years in the life of Kitaushima, a remote fishing village on the northwestern tip of Japan's Sado Island.
North Cormorant Island combines observational documentary with personal meditation, capturing ten years in the life of Kitaushima, a remote fishing village at the northwestern tip of Sado Island in Japan. The film follows villagers who continue their traditional way of life maintained by land and sea, despite a shrinking population. Narrated by director John Williams, the film explores the similarities between Kitaushima, and Williams' memories of his own family's roots in West Wales.
North Cormorant Island won the Audience Award at the 2024 Tokyo Documentary Film Festival, Best Documentary at the Mannheim Arts and Film Festival, and the Outstanding Merit Award at the Outstanding Programs Without Borders Festival in Los Angeles.
Following the North Cormorant Island screening, Yasuhiro Yotsumoto, one of Japan's leading contemporary poets, will read a selection of his poetry inspired by Sado Island. He will also talk about the tradition of art and poetry on Sado, referring to Japan's Noh theater, and the legacy of master Noh Zeami Motokiyo following his exile to the island in 1434. John Williams will share poems from his upcoming collection, North Cormorant Island, which is a companion to the film. Poetry will be presented in Japanese and English, alongside clips and images of recent artworks created in or inspired by the village.
