Speaker
Dr Barnabas Calder
Head of the History of Architecture Research Cluster at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture
This lecture will look back across the history of architecture to make the case that almost all our architecture today is devastatingly and avoidably profligate in its use of natural resources, and especially of energy.
Drawing on historical precedent, practical actions that architects, architecture students and architectural educators can take will be looked against the ecologically devastating status quo.
Dr Barnabas Calder is head of the History of Architecture Research Cluster at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture - the biggest group of research-active architectural historians in any UK university. He is the author of Architecture: From Prehistory to Climate Emergency (Pelican, 2021) and, with Florian Urban, of Form Follows Fuel: 14 Buildings from Antiquity to the Oil Age (Routledge, 2025).
