For May’s talk, our 2026 Eileen Younghusband Memorial Lecture, we’re excited to welcome Micaela Panes (Cardiff University) to speak on the theme: Everyday Politics: Women’s Activism in Wales and South-West England, c.1920-60s

This talk explores the political lives of women in Wales and South West England, examining how activism was shaped both within and beyond traditionally recognised political spaces. It considers how women became politically engaged through their roles in homes, workplaces, and local communities, and how these experiences connected to participation in campaigns, marches, and party politics. Through a series of case studies, the lecture highlights the diverse practices that made up ‘everyday activism’, from informal organising to more visible forms of collective action. It also reflects on the challenges of recovering these histories, and considers how placing everyday experiences alongside formal activism reshapes our understanding of what counts as political participation.
