Join us for the next in our Urbanism at the Welsh School of Architecture Lecture Series, delivered by Dr Hesam Kamalipour

Forms of urban informality have become integral to the ways in which urban environments across diverse contexts are shaped and experienced, particularly within what is commonly referred to as the Global South. This presentation draws on research at the intersections of informal urbanism, urban design, comparative urbanism, urban morphology, and public space.

It addresses the challenge of understanding the complex dynamics of informal urbanism in relation to architecture and urban design and explores how forms of informality work within a global context. The presentation also reflects on recent and forthcoming book projects related to these themes.

Dr Hesam Kamalipour is a Reader in Urban Design at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. His work lies at the intersections of urban design, informal urbanism, public space, urban morphology, and comparative urbanism. He is the lead co-editor of "The Routledge Handbook of Urban Design Research Methods" (Routledge, 2023), lead co-author of "Urban Design Education" (Edward Elgar, 2025), and co-author of "Spatiality of Street Vending" (Routledge, 2026).

He is currently authoring a forthcoming monograph titled "Informal Design" (Routledge) and a further book titled "Framing Urbanism" (Palgrave Macmillan). Dr Kamalipour is an Editorial Board member of Habitat International (Elsevier), Cities (Elsevier), Urban Design and Planning (Emerald), Planning Practice and Research (Taylor & Francis), The Journal of Public Space (City Space Architecture), Journal of Urban Management (Elsevier), and International Journal of Architectural Research (Emerald), among others.
