Cardiff University School of Music and Prosiect Pūtahitanga present Mari Mathias and Filkin’s Drift
Since 2023, Prosiect Pūtahitanga has been working with musicians in Cymru and Aotearoa (New Zealand) to explore their relationship with Cymraeg and te reo Māori (the Māori language). This concert presents two acts – Mari Mathias and Filkin’s Drift – who are strong advocates for the use of Cymraeg, Celtic identity, and Welsh folk in musical performance.
Mari Mathias is a Cardiff-based artist originally from Ceredigion whose work evokes the mythical history of Wales through a modern exploration of traditional music. She has previously contributed to a creative workshop led by Dr Elen Ifan (School of Welsh) as part of Prosiect Pūtahitanga (funded by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol), exploring the role of Cymraeg in her songwriting and artistic identity. Filkin’s Drift - a duo comprising Seth Bye and Cardiff University School of Music alumnus Chris Avery - are a renowned modern folk act who update traditional tunes of the British Isles in their own sophisticated arrangements.
Prosiect Pūtahitanga seeks to identify and acknowledge points of connection between musicians using Cymraeg and te reo Māori in their work and explore how this usage impacts on their sense of identity, belonging, and engagement within music scenes in Cymru and Aotearoa. It is an ongoing interdisciplinary research project which started as a collaboration between staff from University of Waikato in Aotearoa and Cardiff University, with colleagues from across Cardiff University working together to connect musicians from both countries and develop impactful opportunities for them to perform internationally and share their experiences of language and music.
